Alfred Hitchcock defies the ordinary
Alfred
Hitchcock creates each story with a unique style. He challenges the norms of
society, this is evident in the ethics of his films. In the movie “Rear Window,”
the main character throughout the entire movie is shown spying on his
neighbours through his window, this act violates each individual’s privacy. However,
because the main character, L.B Jeffries, figured out a murder, Hitchcock was
able present to his viewers that violating the privacy was acceptable. Therefore, it can be assumed that Hitchcock is
stating that based on the reason for carrying out actions that challenges one’s
ethics it should not be considered as unethical.
The
viewers may question the psychological state of the characters, in “Rear Window,”
“Vertigo” and “Psycho,” it is evident that there are characters who can be considered
as psychologically unstable. Their actions are contrary to that of societal
norms. Hitchcock is one who is constantly showing the idea of break the societal
norm or maybe he is showing that there is no such thing as being normal. Based
on what is taking place during the time of the production of his films,
Hitchcock will incorporate that into his work. By doing this he gives the
audience an understanding of why the characters may behave a particular way or
even the choice of settings.
One
of the most well-known things for Hitchcock’s films are his use of technology
and the science behind it all. He uses the camera to create magic. Based on the
position of the camera he is able to tell the audience exactly what he wants
them to know without having to have the characters say it. This is evident in “Rear
Window” when he zoomed to the thermometer on the wall and also the sweat on the
character’s face which shows that the place is hot. Another film that this is
evident in his “Vertigo” when he zooms to the lady’s hair and then on the
portrait which had the same hairstyle; this shows the audience that there is a
connection between both individuals.
Hitchcock
is not an average film maker, he defies the norms and that is why his films are
so intense and captivating.
